Prosciutto crudo, in English often shortened to prosciutto, is Italian uncooked, unsmoked, and dry-cured ham. Prosciutto crudo is usually served thinly sliced.

The best way to eat prosciutto is out of the paper that the alimentari sliced it into. Or pair it with mozzarella di bufala or some slices of melon for a snack or as an appetiser. Another delicious way to eat prosciutto is between pieces of bread, a panino.

Parma Ham is high in protein and free amino acids, giving it a high overall digestibility. It’s also very rich in oleic acid, a healthy monosaturated omega-9 fatty acid. Slivers of Parma Ham contain many vitamins and minerals: namely B1, B6, B12 and PP (also known as Niacin and a form of B3) plus phosphorus, zinc, iron and selenium.

It’s also notable what Parma Ham doesn’t contain. According to the Consortium’s strict regulations, colouring agents or preservatives such as nitrites and nitrates aren’t allowed in production.

Ingredients that go into Prosciutto di Parma (Parma Ham)

There are only four ingredients in producing Prosciutto di Parma: pork, salt, air and time.

How to cook Prosciutto di Parma

Take a baking sheet and line it with foil, then top it with a baking rack. This is so that as the fat drips off the prosciutto it will stay underneath the meat allowing it to get nice and crispy and preventing it from sitting in the oil.

Spray the baking rack with cooking spray and layer the prosciutto slices on top. Bake them for 10 -11 minutes in a 400 degree oven. Once they’re cooked, carefully place them on a paper towel lined plate to absorb any excess oils. Eat as strips, or crumble them up and use in another recipe!
